About Altra Running Shoes

Altra was founded in 2009 by runners who believed traditional running shoes were squeezing the foot's natural shape. Every Altra is built around two ideas: zero drop (heel and toe at the same height, encouraging a more natural stride) and a FootShape toe box wide enough for toes to actually splay. The result is a fit unlike any other running brand — and a loyal following at Karavel among trail runners and customers with wider forefeet.

Altra for Trail Running and Hiking

Trail is where many runners discover Altra. The wide toe box helps on uneven terrain (toes splay for stability), and the zero-drop platform engages the calves and feet differently than heel-elevated trail shoes. Models like the Lone Peak, Olympus, and Outroad cover most trail use cases.

Altra for Road Running

For pavement, Altra offers the same zero-drop platform in road-tuned models — examples include the Torin (long-distance road), the Provision (stability-leaning), and the Experience (faster, more responsive). All keep the wide toe box, which makes them a fit for runners with bunions, hammertoes, or wide forefeet who can't squeeze into traditional running shoes.

New to Zero Drop? What to Expect

Switching from heel-elevated shoes to Altra takes time — most runners need a couple of weeks of mixed wear before their calves and Achilles fully adjust. We're happy to walk through the transition and recommend a starting model that's gentler for the switch. Don't go straight from a 10mm heel drop to a 5K in zero-drop trail shoes.
